1. What is Aircraft Engineering?
 1.1   Aircraft Maintenance Engineering
Aircraft Maintenance Engineering (AME) is a high profile career with high dignity and responsibility. AME is
responsible for safety, security and maintenance of an aircraft. Aircraft Maintenance Engineers are specially
trained to carry out complex maintenance process including periodical maintenance programs as per the
Aircraft manufactures requirements and issue Flight Release Certificate for safety before take-off the flight.
To carry out this maintenance process and issue Flight Release Certificate (FRC) an individual has to undergo
2 years of approved academic program in approved institution as well as 2 years training in recognised
organisations to obtain an Aircraft Maintenance Engineers License from Directorate General of Civil
Aviation (DGCA), Ministry of Civil Aviation, Government of India.
Safety is a very important issue, when it comes to aviation sector. An aircraft is made of numerous parts,
engines, electrical and electronic systems etc. With time and use, parts tend to wear and tear down, thus
regular inspection and maintenance of aircraft have become very necessary.  Aircraft Maintenance Engineering
professionals are trained to inspect an aircraft, diagnose problems, report the problems found and finally solve
them.
Before a flight takes off, AME professionals work hard and make sure that each and every system available in the
aircraft is in working condition. They ensure that the safety standards are being followed and the aircraft is flight
worthy. In short, AME professionals play a very crucial role in the smooth functioning of aviation sector.
To become an AME professional, one must possess a maintenance engineer license issued by the DGCA
(Directorate General of Civil Aviation). To obtain this license, one must successfully go through the AME
academic program from a DGCA approved institute and live training in flying environment. AME training course
is divided into 4 semesters.
There are the categories in which a candidate can take AME License in:-
A: - This license allows maintaining the aircrafts within limit.
  • Category A1:- This license allows to work as technician and maintaining the aeroplanes with jet engine.
  • Category A2:- This license allows to work as technician and maintaining the aeroplanes with piston engine.
  • Category A3:- This license allows to work as technician and maintaining the helicopters with jet engine.
  • Category A4:- This license allows to work as technician and maintaining the helicopters with piston engine.
B1:- B1 license is the mechanical stream which deals with engines, wings and many other
 components.
  • Category B1.1:- This license is regarding the maintenance of jet engine aeroplanes. A jet engine creates
force by releasing a high speed jet of a liquid or a gas.
  • Category B1.2:- This license is regarding the maintenance of piston engine aeroplanes. A piston engine is
typically a heat engine that uses one or more reciprocating pistons to convert pressure into a rotating
    motion.
  • Category B1.3:- This license is regarding the maintenance of jet engine helicopters. The engine that
accelerates and discharges a fast moving jet of fluid to generate thrust in accordance with Newton's third
law of motion as known as jet engine.
  • Category B1.4:- This license is regarding the maintenance of piston engine helicopters. Piston engine is
an internal combustion engine that uses one or more reciprocating pistons to convert pressure into a
    rotating motion.
B2:- B2 is the license is avionics stream which is related to electronic components in the aircrafts
which are categories in the following part:-
  • Electrical System
  • Instrumental System
  • Radio Navigation and Communication
1.2             Aerospace Engineering
Aerospace Engineering is a branch of engineering that offers skills and knowledge to design, manufacture and
maintain spacecrafts, aircrafts, missiles, and weapons systems. A large area of Aerospace Engineering consists
of Mechanical Engineering covering a wide range of topics, including computer applications, physics, structures,
mathematics, electricity, drafting, robotics, aeronautics etc. It also covers two aspects of engineering, namely
Aeronautical Engineering and Astronautical Engineering.
Aerospace Engineering is considered among the toughest branches of engineering that has carved its comfortable
situation among the students. However, once completed this course gives 'wings' to the career taking it to new
heights.
It is a highly specialised technological field that requires overall excellence in mathematical, calculative, and
observational skills. Research in this field takes years to be completed, thus, patience and persistence are
important.
The duration of the Aerospace Engineering is of 4 years bachelor programme that includes practical and
theoretical sessions on aircrafts and spacecrafts. There are 8 semesters which students have to clear to obtain
the degree. This course can be approved by the Universities or Board to educate the students.
1.3             Aeronautical Engineering
Aeronautical Engineering is the specialised branch of engineering that deals with the designing, construction,
testing, and manufacturing of the aircraft which are in Earth’s atmosphere. They plays a vital role as they have
to  provide the direction to the designing, construction of aircrafts, evaluate the proposal, quality checking of
an aircraft.
The Aeronautical Engineering allows to look after the research and development of different types of aircrafts.
They work with the help of updated version of Computer Softwares such as Computer Aided Design (CAD) to
develop the aircraft or related avionics.
Aeronautical Engineering is a 4-year undergraduate program includes 8 semesters of practical and theoretical
knowledge of an aircraft. The labs and workshops helps to acquire more skills and facing  the difficulties in
Industry and concentrate on research and development.
Aeronautical engineering manages the plan, design, development, and investigation of an aircraft. This courses
of study and syllabus cover zones like design, plan, structures, aerodynamics, streamlined features and
frameworks.
An Aeronautical Engineer should have a good problem solving, planning, mathematical precision and computer,
design, working under pressure, and communication skills. The students are passionate and hardworking about
the career they are choosing.
