Aircraft Maintenance Engineering (AME) is an international program regulated by Directorate General of Civil Aviation, Govt of India. An AME is responsible for safety, security and maintenance of an aircraft. No aircraft can fly without its safety certification by an appropriately License holder AME. Thus an Aircraft Maintenance Engineer shoulders the responsibility of aircraft safety and the personnel onboard on behalf of Govt. of India.

To be eligible for issuing Flight Release Certificate (fit to fly), an engineer required to possess a valid AME License issued by the DGCA, Govt. of India.


Aircraft Maintenance Engineering is a 4 years License program in which candidate has to undergo 2 years regular academic program conducted by the DGCA approved AME institutes and 2 year training in Airline or MRO Industries. In the academic program student has to complete their module papers conducted by DGCA. 

After completion of modules and required experience student will get AME License and On the basis of AME License student can do job as Aircraft Maintenance Engineer in government sector as well as private sector worldwide.
Aircraft Maintenance Engineering is divided in following streams.
  • Mechanical (B1)
  • Aeroplane & Power Plant (B1.1 & B1.2)
  • Helicopter & Power Plant (B1.3 & B1.4)

  • Avionics (B2)

Responsibilities & Lifestyle of an AME

An Aircraft Maintenance Engineer is responsible for ensuring an aircraft operates properly and safely. A maintenance engineer may make repairs, troubleshoot problems, conduct inspections and make upgrades to aircrafts. Daily duties may include keeping records of and performing scheduled maintenance, making emergency repairs or preparing for DGCA inspections.
An AME works with specialized aviation and power tools, computers, diagnostic equipment and x-ray machines. While working, he or she may climb ladders or stand on scaffolds, manage other maintenance staff or spend long hours on emergency repairs. Maintenance engineers must carefully observe all DGCA rules and regulations when performing any job duty.

According to payscale.com, in May 2016 Aircraft Maintenance Engineers (AME) earned a median annual salary of $62,620/-, in Indian currency it is approx INR 40 Lakhs per year.

Eligibility for Admission in AME

Candidate seeking admission in AME Course has to fulfill these eligibilities
  • Candidate must have either passed 10+2 or is appearing in 2019 with non-medical stream.
  • A candidate possessing three years Diploma in any stream recognized by Central / State Govt, is also eligible for admission in AME.
  • All candidates who are eligible for admission in B. Tech. Courses are also eligible for Aircraft Maintenance Engineering (AME) Course.
  • Candidate age must be between 16 to 28 years at the time of admission.
  • Candidate has to qualify AME CET 2019.

About AME CET 2019

Aircraft Maintenance Engineering Common Entrance Test (AME CET) is the National Level Common Entrance Test to get admission in Aircraft Maintenance Engineering (AME) in Govt. approved AME institutions in India. It is a single window solution for admission in AME in DGCA, Govt of India approved AME institutes in India. The exams are of the objective pattern and in Hindi & English medium. On the basis of AME CET 2019 All India Rank students participate in counselling and confirm their admission in government approved AME institutions. On the basis of examination student can get admission in best AME institute on the basis of their AIR.

All AME institutes are approved by Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), Ministry of Civil Aviation, Government of India.

AME CET 2019 Examination Details

  • AME CET 2019 consists of 90 MCQ (Multiple Choice Questions).
  • The questions will be asked from subjects as Physics, Chemistry Mathematics, English and General Awareness.
  • AME CET question papers will be in both Hindi and English medium, but in case of any ambiguity, the English version shall be considered final.
  • This exam will be held in online as well as offline mode.
  • There is negative marking for incorrect answers. 4 marks are awarded for correct answers and 1 mark is deducted for incorrect answers.

  • Offline and Online will be conducted on same day.
  • AME CET 2019 exam will be of 1 Hour 30 minutes.
